Introduction

Located in Newmarket, Sir William Mulock Secondary School (SWMSS) officially opened its doors in December 2001. The school pays homage to Sir William Mulock, a significant figure in Canadian politics during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As the inaugural Postmaster General of Canada, Chief Justice of the Ontario Supreme Court, and Chancellor of the University of Toronto for two decades, his multifaceted achievements serve as a guiding beacon for all to strive for excellence and reach new heights.

Sir William Mulock Secondary School offers an array of courses tailored to meet the educational requirements of our student community. The school provides programs at the locally developed, applied, academic and open levels.

The school also boasts state-of-the-art facilities designed to nurture a holistic learning environment. It features well-equipped spaces such as art labs with darkrooms, modern classrooms, a vibrant cafeteria, a design and technological lab, a career center, a fully equipped food lab, outdoor fields, gymnasiums, and family studies lab. Additionally, the resource center, weight room, communication technological lab, and drama room with a stage contribute to the diverse offerings that cater to the varied interests and pursuits of students.

Highlights

Beginning in the academic year 2010/2011, Sir William Mulock Secondary School introduced a novel blended learning program for its Grade 9 students. The program mandated students to bring netbooks/laptops with wireless capabilities to classes. Following a successful inaugural year, the program expanded to include grades 10, 11, and 12. The success of this model has led to its adoption in several other schools within the York Region District School Board. The initiative aims to modernize teaching and learning approaches by integrating traditional and technological teaching strategies.

The school also boasts its own robotics club known as Ravens Robotics. The club's main objective is to conceptualize and construct robots for engineering competitions, specifically in the realm of VEX robotics. Since 2008, Raven Robotics has actively participated in these competitions, engaging in regional events across Ontario and beyond. The club not only provides an environment for students to showcase their technical skills but also offers valuable opportunities for the application of science, mathematics, leadership, teamwork, and effective time and resource management.

The Mulock Student Council is an integral part of the school community as it focuses on promoting school spirit, social events and fundraisers. Students work together to organize and and support a variety of activities and events that include:

Academics

Sir William Mulock Secondary School offers the High Performance Athlete (HPA) program for students who are competing at the provincial, national and/or international level. It also offers the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Business, Health and Wellness, and Information and Communications Technology. Students may also enroll in Dual Credit (DC) through which they can take college or apprenticeship courses that count towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and a postsecondary certificate, diploma, degree or a Certificate of Apprenticeship.
