Introduction
Located in Markham, Bill Crothers Secondary School, is an athletic based school named in honor of Bill Crothers, a former Olympic athlete and Chair of the York Region District School Board. Spanning 32 acres, the school's mission revolves around promoting learning through a health-conscious and active lifestyle. With a commitment to creating an environment that is conducive to athletes, Bill Crothers Secondary School aims to provide students with an athlete-friendly setting that promotes both academic excellence and physical well-being.
The school and its premises were designed to offer top-notch athletic and training facilities. The campus features an impressive array of amenities, including three gyms, two high-caliber artificial turf sports fields along with a natural turf field, an eight-lane track, state-of-the-art training rooms, a walking trail, a broadcasting booth, track and field training facilities, a well-equipped weight room, and a dedicated dance studio. Additionally, the school features a plyometrics room, providing athletes with a specialized space for practicing Olympic weight lifting, deadlifts, wind sprints, and various other training exercises, emphasizing the institution's commitment to fostering a high-quality athletic environment.
Highlights
As a partner with the York University Athletic Therapy Certificate Program, BCSS extends athletic therapy services to qualifying students. The institution hosts a cohort of students actively participating in the program, complemented by the expertise of Certified Athletic Therapist Jessica Dalliday. Aligning with the principles of Canadian Sport For Life, which seeks to enhance the quality of sport and physical activity in Canada, and the Long-term Athlete Development model, a comprehensive seven-stage pathway guiding individuals through training, competition, and recovery experiences in sports and physical activities, the school is dedicated to delivering a holistic approach to sport and physical activity for its students.
The school also boasts a legacy of highly successful alumni in sports, including tennis players Bianca Andreescu and Carol Zhao, as well as basketball player Trae Bell-Haynes, exemplifying its contribution to the development of accomplished athletes.
Academics
BCSS offers the High Performance Athlete (HPA), intended for athletic students to train and compete at the provincial, national and/or international level. It also offers the Dual Credit program, through which, students can take college or apprenticeship courses that count towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and a postsecondary certificate, diploma, degree or a Certificate of Apprenticeship. BCSS also offers the Specialist High Skills Major program in sectors such as sport management, performance, entertainment and broadcasting, and recreation.
