Introduction

Dr. J.M. Denison Secondary School is a tribute to the legacy of Dr. John Michael Denison, a beloved and highly respected doctor in the Newmarket community. Dr. Denison left an indelible mark through his generosity and exceptional work with teenagers, prompting the community to dedicate the school to his memory. Embodying the vision of the school, his quote, "May this school be a place in the community where teachers will create a sense of wonder and students will experience the joy of learning in a beautiful environment," serves as a guiding principle.

Since its opening in 1989, Dr. J.M. Denison SS has undergone significant developments, including expansions in 1991 and the completion of a state-of-the-art technological studies wing in 2009. The school also boasts diverse facilities to support both academic and extracurricular programs. These include an art lab, drama stage, construction lab, family studies lab, gymnasium, music rooms, outdoor fields, an outdoor track, a resource center, science labs, and a fashion/sewing lab.

The school is also home to many successful alumni, particularly in the world of sports, such as NBA basketball player Kevin Pagnos as well as NHL hockey players Kurtis Gabriel and Sam Bennett.

Highlights

Dr. J.M. Denison High School stands out with its unique and impactful clubs. The Eco-Ethical group takes a proactive approach to environmental and social justice issues, organizing impactful events like the annual Fairly Bazaar and Fashion4U show. With a dedicated webpage offering "everyday ideas to help make the world a better place," they foster awareness among peers and the wider community.

The Math Club, known for its diverse contests, and the Science Club, which has gained recognition for its participation in the Science Olympics, reflect the school's commitment to academic excellence. For programming enthusiasts, the biannual competition "Pyweek" provides a platform for showcasing coding skills. In 2014, a Denison team named "101 Factorial" achieved recognition, securing the third position for their entertaining game, "Hyperturret Defense."

The school is also known for its exciting music program which organizes annual trips that expose students to cultural and musical experiences. These outings include visits to musicals in Stratford, Ontario, and participation in national competitions such as MusicFest Canada in Ottawa. To allow students to gain a broader understanding and appreciation of music.

Academics

Dr. J.M. Dension School is well known for its offering of the International Baccalaureate Candidate (ICP) program. It also features the High Performance Athlete (HPA) program for students who are competing at the provincial, national and/or international levels, as well as Dual Credit for those interested in taking college or apprenticeship courses that count towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and a postsecondary certificate, diploma, degree or a Certificate of Apprenticeship. The school also offers the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Program in Business, Construction, Health and Wellness, and Hospitality and Tourism.
