Introduction
Huron Heights Secondary School, located in Newmarket, Ontario was established in 1962. The school, serving students from the Newmarket and East Gwillimbury area, takes pride in its commitment to fostering a culture of respect and is guided by the motto “Reach for the Heights”, encouraging students to strive for excellence in their academic and personal pursuits. The school’s name pays homage to the First Nation that once inhabited the surrounding area and the elevated land on which the school stands in the northwest part of the town. Over the years, Huron Heights has seen growth and development, with key additions in 1965 and 1969, further enhancing its facilities and educational offerings.
The facilities at Huron Heights are designed to enhance the overall learning experience. Modern classrooms, well-equipped science labs, and sports facilities contribute to a dynamic educational environment. The school’s commitment to technology integration ensures that students have access to cutting-edge resources, preparing them for the challenges of the digital age.
Highlights
Several alumni from Huron Heights have gone on to make significant contributions in various fields, showcasing the school’s impact on shaping future leaders. Among them are Jeff Beukeboom, a former Stanley Cup-winning NHL defenseman who attended Huron Heights during his time with the Newmarket Flyers in the Ontario Provincial Junior “A” league. Veronica Brenner, another graduate, achieved a silver medal in freestyle skiing at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Jim Brennan, a professional football (soccer) player and member of the Canada national team, played a crucial role as the first player of the Toronto FC franchise and competed in the FA Premier League. Curtis Joseph, a long-time NHL goalie, and Sam Reid, a songwriter-producer known for his role as the keyboard player for Glass Tiger, further contribute to the school’s legacy of successful individuals.
Academics
Huron Heights Secondary School boasts a well known art program, known as the Huron Arts Program, encompassing various disciplines such as dance, music, theatre, and visual arts. As part of the York Region District School Board Specialized Arts Program, the registration process is centralized for all candidates. allowing students in grades 8 and 9 to apply online. Students are eligible to apply to the school in their Program Area Boundary.
Huron Heights also offers Exploring Opportunities Programs (EOP) in Construction, Manufacturing and Transportation. Other programs include the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in the following six sectors: Arts and Culture, Construction, Health and Wellness, Hospitality and Tourism, Manufacturing, and Transportation. Students also have the option of taking Dual Credit (DC) through which they can take college or apprenticeship courses that count towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and a postsecondary certificate, diploma, degree or a Certificate of Apprenticeship.
