Introduction

Situated in the community of Unionville within Markham, Markville Secondary School has a rich  history linked to the Melchior Quantz family from Germany, who, along with William Berczy, contributed to the development of the area.  Initially named Quantztown Secondary School and later Melchior Quantz High School in the 1990s, the school eventually adopted its current name, Markville Secondary School, reflecting its location between the towns of Markham and Unionville.Notably, in 1996, the school underwent expansions, including the addition of a new math and computer wing on the third floor.

Recognized for its academic excellence, Markville Secondary School  secured the 2nd rank in the Fraser Ranking System. The school is dedicated to nurturing students' overall development by emphasizing personal and ethical values alongside the enhancement of creative, social, academic, and technological skills.

Highlights 

Markville's staff has been recognized for their outstanding contributions, with teachers Adrienne Chong, Rob Cotey, and Mark Melnyk being honored with the Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching Excellence. These educators contribute to various subjects, including Canadian and World History, World Politics, Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity, and World History to the End of the 15th Century. Complementing its academic achievements, Markville Secondary School boasts a robust music program, with students actively participating in competitions at music festivals such as the OBA (Ontario Band Association), Kiwanis Music Festival, and Music Alive. Markville's musical prowess is showcased in two annual concerts at the Markham Theatre – "Festive Sounds" in winter and "Markville Pops" in spring. Beyond academics and music, the school features a Peer Support Program, a volunteer-driven tutoring program, enabling students to assist their peers in various subjects while earning volunteer hours. 

Academics 

Markville Secondary School follows an Early Start schedule and thus operates on a modified version of the Regular Secondary School Calendar. 

The school also features a variety of special education programs to enhance student’s learning experience such as the gifted program, Dual Credit, and  the High Performance Athlete (HPA) program for elite athletes who are striving to compete at the provincial, national or  international levels. The school also offers Specialist High Skills Major Program  Arts and Culture, Business, Environment Program, Health and Wellness Program, and Information and Communications. Moreover, academically inclined students have the opportunity to enroll in the Advanced Placement (AP) Program to attain a high level of enrichment and acquire advanced study skills. Courses offered in the AP program  include Calculus, Chemistry, Microeconomics, European History, English, and  Geography (World Issues). The school also offers the Exploring Opportunities Program, which allows students to focus on developing a high skill level in a particular technology.
