Introduction 

MCI was founded in 1992 and located in the East Milliken neighborhood of Markham, Ontario.

Middlefield Collegiate Institute  is dedicated to creating a secure and inclusive learning space. The school emphasizes the appreciation of diverse cultures, ideas, opinions, and collaborative efforts among its students. Embracing the motto “High Expectations, High Achievement,” MCI is committed to excellence in all aspects of students’ academic and personal growth. This commitment is exemplified by its notable achievement of being ranked 8th out of 676 Ontario high schools in the 2014–2015 Fraser Institute school report, solidifying its reputation for providing a high-quality education.

Notable features of the school that add to its uniqueness include a large glass ceiling in the rotunda which lets natural light into the central section of the, reducing environmental impact and earning MCI recognition as a Silver Eco School. Enhancing accessibility, the school also  features a glass elevator to accommodate individuals with disabilities. In 2008, due to the growing community, the school expanded its west wing, adding a hairstyling classroom, construction classroom, garage, washrooms, and an emergency exit. Other noteworthy facilities at MCI include a Wood Shop, Communication Technological Labs, Family Studies Labs, Drama Stage, Food Lab, Weight room, Rock climbing wall, Soccer Fields, Running Track, and a Photography Dark Room.

Middlefield Collegiate Institute Highlights 

Middlefield Collegiate Institute has achieved notable success in various realms, particularly in sports and academic endeavors. In soccer, Middlefield stands out as the sole York Region school to secure the soccer championship two consecutive years, starting with the junior boys in 2003-2004. The school’s athletic success also extends to basketball, with both the Senior and Junior Boys Basketball teams winning the 2015 York Region Athletic Association Tier 2 Basketball championship. In the realm of law, Middlefield’s Mock Trial Team, guided by teachers Mr. Glass, Ms. Mobilos, and Mr. Draycott, has consistently demonstrated excellence. Over the past twelve years, the team has consistently reached the Elite 8 in Ontario, clinching four silver medals, making them the most successful team from the school.

The school has also had the privilege of benefiting from the expertise of exceptional and highly skilled staff members. Michael Morin, the recipient of the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education Exceptional and Creative Teaching Award,  has been a Mathematics Teacher at the school since 2000. Marina Cohen, a Canadian children’s author renowned for works such as “Ghost Ride,”  served as a former English Teacher from 1994 to 1995. Sophie Patras, the current English teacher since 2003, has a background as a former producer and scriptwriter for CBC’s “Canada: A People’s History.” These individuals have significantly contributed to the school’s reputation by bringing their exceptional skills and talents,  thereby enriching the educational experience for students.

Academics 

Middlefield Collegiate Institute offers the Specialist High Skill Major (SHSM) program in Transportation, Health & Wellness, and Information & Communication Technology​​. It also features Dual Credit (DC), allowing students to take college or apprenticeship courses that count towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and a postsecondary certificate, diploma, degree or a Certificate of Apprenticeship.

Sports and Athletics

MCI features a variety of athletic groups and sports for students to participate in such as:

  • Slo-pitch
  • Track and Field 
  • Ultimate Frisbee

In addition to competitive sports teams,students have the opportunity to participate in in-school sporting events such as:

  • Middlefield’s Basketball Association (MBA)
  • Middlefield’s Iron Person
