Introduction
Nestled in the heart of Markham, Milliken Mills High School stands as a cornerstone of education. The school stands at the intersection of Milliken Mills West and East neighborhoods, next to the Milliken Mills Community Center. Completed in January 1989, the school underwent a crucial expansion in 2002, adding 12 classrooms, teacher workspaces, and seminar areas to accommodate its growing student population and enhance the learning environment. The school has also shown a strong commitment to promoting cooperation and respect for individual differences through the celebration of the diverse strengths and qualities that each student brings to the school. With a representation of over 30 cultural groups, the school also embraces a multicultural atmosphere, fostering inclusivity and understanding among its diverse community.
Highlights
Milliken Mills High School takes pride in its athletic alumni who have left a significant impact in the world of sports. Andre De Grasse, the acclaimed sprinter, exemplifies the school’s commitment to excellence in track and field. George Kottaras, a notable professional baseball player, adds to the roster of accomplished athletes shaped by the school. Contributing to this legacy is Corey Muirhead, currently making waves in the Czech National Basketball League with BK Pardubice.
Academics
Milliken Mills is one the secondary schools in York Region offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. Students initially enroll in the pre-IB program, after which, they can choose to pursue the IB Diploma Programme during their Grade 11 and 12 years.
The school also offers the Specialist High Skills Major Program in Health & Wellness, Environment, Business. Students also have the option of enrolling in Dual Credit (DC) through which they can take college or apprenticeship courses that count towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and a postsecondary certificate, diploma, degree or a Certificate of Apprenticeship.
