Hello,

My name is John Filippeos. I am an Ontario Certified Teacher with over a decade of experience tutoring and teaching high school Math, Science and English. In that time, I have taught more than 400 students both privately and in the public school setting. I established York Region Tutoring in 2017 to see through my vision of Education – one that succeeds in having students develop a resistance to superficial learning. In my time with students, I have observed that the human brain is naturally inclined towards learning through repetition-driven familiarity. The more something is repeated, the more credibility it garners in the mind, and the more prepared we are to accept it without raising a critical lens and asking: why? Consequently students tend to overestimate their understanding of course content, making it especially frustrating when they feel their marks aren’t lining up.

My through-line as the Principal and Head Tutor at York Region Tutoring is unambiguous. I work to increase the proportion of students who approach their academics with an incisive disposition, who demand to understand rather than to accept, and who never again fall victim to a pale imitation of learning offered by a questionable public education infrastructure.

On account of our collective goal to bring about a shift in student learning, I have taken great care in selecting a group of tutors through whom I vicariously fulfill my commitment to this cause.
