Introduction
Stephen Lewis Secondary School, located in Vaughan, Ontario, was named in honor of Canadian statesman Stephen Lewis. The school embodies his legacy as a prominent Canadian politician, public speaker, broadcaster, and diplomat. The school is also dedicated to fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment that values and promotes academic excellence, critical thinking, technology for life-long learning, positive character development, and principles of equity, respect, and responsibility. Notable alumni include Denis Shapovalov, a talented tennis player who secured victories at the 2016 Junior Wimbledon Singles Finals and the 2015 US Open Junior Doubles Finals.
Highlights
Stephen Lewis Secondary School stands out for its vibrant and engaging events that contribute to both student life and charitable causes. The school recognizes athletic achievements through the presentation of three Sport Awards: the Varsity Male Athlete of the Year, Varsity Female Athlete of the Year, and the Triple Crown Fitness Award. Demonstrating a commitment to philanthropy, the school also actively participates in fundraising for the Stephen Lewis Foundation, founded by the esteemed namesake of the school. Among its notable events is the annual “12 Hours for 12K Wake-A-Thon,” where students gather for a night of activities, games, and fundraising efforts, staying awake for 12 hours in support of the foundation. Additionally, Stephen Lewis Secondary School joins the global effort for cancer research through the Terry Fox Run, an annual event where students collect pledges before participating in a walk, jog, or run around the soccer field, contributing to a worthy cause.
Academics
Stephen Lewis Secondary School features Alternative Education Quadmester Programs as well as the Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM) program in Health and Wellness, Hospitality, and Manufacturing. It also offers the Dual Credit (DC) program through which students can take college or apprenticeship courses that count towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and a postsecondary certificate, diploma, degree or a Certificate of Apprenticeship.
