Overview of Grade 9 Math

Grade 9 Math allows students to reinforce and further advance their understanding of mathematical concepts including number sense, operations, algebra, measurement, geometry, data, probability, and financial literacy. Students will utilize mathematical processes, modeling, and coding to comprehend and apply mathematics to culturally relevant real-world scenarios. They will also strengthen their mathematical reasoning skills, such as proportional reasoning, spatial reasoning, and algebraic reasoning, through problem-solving and communicating their thought processes.

It’s imperative for students in Grade 9 to establish a solid foundation to confidently tackle more complex and abstract concepts in Grade 10/11, such as Factoring, Radicals, Quadratics, and Trigonometry. To support students in fortifying their understanding and achieving their academic goals, York Region tutors offer reinforcement of challenging concepts, aid in homework and assignments, and provide access to past tests administered by school teachers to familiarize students with test formats.

Additionally, York Region Tutoring offers Grade 9 EQAO tutoring, practice worksheets, and online assistance to further support students in their academic journey.

New Grade 9 Math Curriculum (2021)

The new Grade 9 math curriculum in Ontario, Canada was implemented in September 2021. This new curriculum, announced by Education Minister Stephen Lecce, covers more areas of mathematics and includes lessons on financial literacy and coding. It also eliminated the practice of “streaming”, where students had to choose between “academic” or “applied” math courses.

The new 2020 Ontario Math curriculum is divided into five core strands:

  • Number
  • Algebra (and Coding)
  • Data
  • Geometry and Measurement
  • Financial Literacy

grade 9 math 1
  • Development of Numbers and Number Sets: Demonstrate an understanding of the development and use of numbers, and make connections between sets of numbers
  • Powers: Represent numbers in various ways, evaluate powers, and simplify expressions by using the relationships between powers and their exponent
  • Number Sense and Operations: Apply an understanding of rational numbersratiosratespercentages, and proportions, in various mathematical contexts, and to solve problems
  • Algebraic Expressions and Equations: Demonstrate an understanding of the development and use of algebraic concepts and of their connection to numbers, using various tools and representations
  • Coding: Apply coding skills to represent mathematical concepts and relationships dynamically, and to solve problems, in algebra and across the other strands
  • Application of Relations: Represent and compare linear and non-linear relations that model real-life situations, and use these representations to make predictions
  • Characteristics of Relations: Demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of various representations of linear and non-linear relations, using tools, including coding when appropriate

  • Collection, Representation, and Analysis of Data: Describe the collection and use of data, and represent and analyse data involving one and two variables.
  • Mathematical Modelling: Apply the process of mathematical modelling, using data and mathematical concepts from other strands, to represent, analyse, make predictions, and provide insight into real-life situations

  • Geometric and Measurement Relationships: Demonstrate an understanding of the development and use of geometric and measurement relationships, and apply these relationships to solve problems, including problems involving real-life situations
  • Financial Decisions: Demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to make informed financial decisions
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN OUR LESSONS?

York Region Tutoring Provides

Write Past Tests

If a student is approaching a forthcoming test, we can provide them with a previous test to be completed at home before their upcoming session. Subsequently, during their next class, just before the exam, they can review the test with their tutor. These tests are exclusively sourced from high schools in York Region and other areas in Ontario, serving as the definitive benchmark for students to assess their readiness.

We Come To Class Prepared

York Region Tutors and are equipped with drawing tablets making collaboration simple, efficient and effective.  We also offer drawing tablets at a discount for purchase to students who really take to the functionality of the product.

YRDSB-Minded Homework

At the parents’ request, following each tutoring session, our tutors can assign homework tailored to address weaknesses and reinforce strengths in students. Additionally, we incorporate homework questions directly extracted from previous tests and quizzes administered by YRDSB school teachers, allowing students to familiarize themselves with potential test questions.
