Introduction
Sutton District High School, situated in Sutton, Ontario, takes its name from the surrounding geographic area. Serving as the primary secondary school for various communities in the town of Georgina, including Sutton West, Pefferlaw, and Udora, Sutton D.H.S. officially opened its doors in 1956. Over the years, additions were made to the original school in 1962 and 1969. The school proudly embraces the motto, “Happy is he who knows the reasons of things.”
Sutton District High School boasts a range of well-equipped facilities, including art and photography labs, auto and small engines labs, construction and hospitality labs, family studies lab, design and communication tech lab, multiple science labs covering various disciplines, an SHSM health care lab, a lecture theatre, two gymnasiums, change rooms with shower facilities, an outdoor track and field, a weight/fitness room, a dance studio, and a First Nations’ Student Centre.
Highlights
Beyond sports, the school boasts various clubs, including the Music Club, Art Club, the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA), and the Movie Club. Since September 2016, the school proudly participated in the FIRST Robotics Competition, operating under the name Sutton Robotics League with the team number 6514. Alongside these extracurriculars, the school maintains an active student council and athletic council, providing avenues for involvement and leadership.
The school also features its own First Nations, Metis, Inuit Study Centre to promote First Nation Studies within The York Region Board of Education. It also provides direction and resources to enable First Nations students to take advantage of specialized training and employment opportunities as well as enable positive interactions of First Nations People and the community at large.Various services and resources are offered at the centre such as Ojibwe language material, workshops on Aboriginal Issues (Education, Social, Culture, Recreation, Health), contacts with aboriginal organization, First Nations art/artists, and information on self government videos.
Academics
Sutton District High School features Quadmester programs and the Exploring Opportunities Program (EOP) in the Transportation (Small Engine) Health Care. It also offers High Performance Athlete (HPA) for competing athletes, Dual Credit (DC), and the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Environment, Health and Wellness, and Transportation
