Introduction
Established in 1969 and situated in Thornhill, Ontario, Canada, Thornlea Secondary School occupies a prominent location on the northeast corner of Bayview Avenue and Willowbrook Road, just south of Highway 404. Beyond academic excellence and athletic achievements, Thornlea students actively engage in social activism, contributing to events such as the Terry Fox Run and the Walk Against Male Violence. The school also stands as a vibrant hub for the arts, nurturing a creative community that has produced notable Canadian musicians, including The Philosopher Kings, Prozzak, and Hayden, among others. Thornlea’s legacy extends beyond the classroom, fostering an environment where students contribute meaningfully to both local and national initiatives.
Highlights
Thornlea Secondary School stands out with notable achievements in academics, sports, and extracurricular activities. Students have excelled in provincial science competitions and claimed top prizes in Wilfrid Laurier University’s Stock Market Competition. The school boasts achievements in various sports, with cross country and rugby successes at the YRAA level and commendable performances in OFSAA Track and Field events. Thornlea is also home to Thunder Robotics, a thriving robotics team that participates in the First Robotics Competition. Additionally, the Thornlea Wellness Initiative Council (TWIC) actively promotes student well-being and mental health through engaging events and activities, including an annual wellness fair, therapy dog events, soccer tournaments, and chess tournaments.
Academics
Thornlea Secondary School is well known for its offering of the French Immersion and Advanced Placement (AP) programs. Various courses can be taken under the AP Program, including Art, Advanced Functions, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Calculus and French. The school also features the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Arts and Culture, Business, and Health and Wellness. Students may also enroll in Dual Credit (DC) through which they can take college or apprenticeship courses that count towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and a postsecondary certificate, diploma, degree or a Certificate of Apprenticeship.
