Introduction
Unionville High School (UHS) is renowned for its distinguished arts program, Arts Unionville. With a commitment to nurturing artistic talents, the school purposefully designed and equipped enhanced arts facilities. The school’s motto, “Create and Achieve,” aligns with the ethos of its highly reputable arts program, emphasizing the importance of artistic creativity and empowering students to excel in their artistic pursuits.
Originally opened in 1985, Unionville High School expanded with the construction of the west wing in the Spring of 2002. The comprehensive facilities at Unionville High School include specialized rooms for visual arts, communication/media, construction, design and technology, dance studios, music practice, drama, a black box theatre, family studies labs, a photography darkroom, science labs, and a guidance office. The school also boasts two gymnasiums, outdoor fields, a track, a weight room, student cafeteria, student council and yearbook offices, and nine computer labs, two of which feature Apple computers as part of the Apple Digital Campus initiative.
Highlights
Unionville High School has garnered acclaim for its exceptional teaching staff. In 2005, Sheila Hetherington and Jerry Berridge, teachers in the history and tech departments, received the prestigious Governor General’s Awards for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History. Their commendable efforts were further acknowledged in 2006 when they received the Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence. The school also takes pride in its accomplished alumni, including successful actors and actresses like Christina Cox, Matthew Knight, Steve Byers, and James Cade. Academically, Unionville High School has excelled, evident in its performance in compulsory provincial testing as well as participation in extracurricular academic competitions. The Fraser Institute’s 2014 Report Card underscored the school’s academic excellence, awarding it a remarkable rating of 9.5/10 and ranking it second out of 740 schools in Ontario.
Academics
Unionville High School’s Art Unionville, is an innovative four-year program that runs in tandem with the regular academic curriculum for high school students. It is structured around four categories: musical arts, visual arts, dramatic arts, and dance arts. The school also offers Dual Credit (DC) as well as the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Arts & Culture, Business, Health & Wellness and Information, and Communications Technology.
